Why athletes need more protein

When exercising it is important to consume sufficient amounts of high quality protein to avoid catabolism and sub optimal recovery. The current RDA for protein in healthy adults is 0.8 g/kg body weight per day. This amount is supposed to meet the requirements of nearly all healthy men and women (97.5%) aged 19 year and older, but does not consider additional requirements when exercising. These are caused by oxidation of protein during exercise, repair of damaged muscle tissue and lean muscle growth. Other factors determining the amount of protein needed by athletes are protein quality, total energy intake, carbohydrate intake, type and intensity of exercise, time of protein intake. Considering all these aspects and depending on the type of sports recommendations for protein intake are mostly aligned with 1.4 – 2.0 g/kg body weight per day.
